Beverley-High-School

Beverley High School has for second year running got three students who will represent the school in a national finals of the Spelling Bee competition, and they almost made it four.

Alice Tradewell, Mia Wallis and Izzy Furness all made it through with Molly Thompson narrowly missing out on the finals that will be held later this year at Cambridge University.

Contestants’ were given a list of 150 words in French or German that they had to learn and were then given just one minute to spell out as many as they could out loud using the French or German alphabet.

Mia Wallis came second and Alice Tradewell got third in German with Izzy Furness picking up second in French.

Teacher Julie Wilson said;

“The competition was open to all Year 7 students, it started in the school during at Christmas and we whittled it down four who represented the school at Hull University in the Yorkshire and Humber Region.”

Alice, Mia and Izzy will now take on the winners from right around the country. Beverley High School have a good track record in the competition, Lydia Pickering who is now in year 8, and therefore cannot enter, claimed a third place in last years finals.

Julie is hoping all the girls enjoy the experience of going to one of the world’s most famous universities she said;

“I am very proud of their achievements, this is a very difficult thing to do, many people would struggle to do this in English let alone a foreign language.”

“This will be a fabulous opportunity for each of them to see and experience what is it like at Cambridge University and inspire them in their studies, who knows with any luck will we come back with more awards!”

Molescroft Primary School Earns National Teaching Accolade

A Beverley primary school has been chosen to help lead the way in raising standards in the classroom.

Molescroft Primary School is one of just 100 schools in England to be granted teaching school status, which is part of an initiative that was launched last year by the Department for Education.

The national accolade, awarded by the National College for School Leadership, entitles the school to lead the training and development for staff and Molescroft Primary School will be working in a partnership with Beverley High School, Beverley Grammar School, Beverley Manor Nursery, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the University of Hull.

The teaching schools initiative started in the autumn and schools who gain teaching status will do three things:
* provide support for trainee teachers, leaders and other colleagues in schools by working as part of a partnership
* provide support for schools that are facing challenging circumstances, such as those in an Ofsted category
* provide professional development and leadership development for school staff throughout the partnership

As well as offering support, teaching schools will identify, develop and co-ordinate expertise in other schools for the benefit of all pupils in their area and will play a key part in driving school improvement.

In order to become a teaching school, a number of criteria have to be met which include demonstrating a significant track record of successful, collaborative relationships with partner schools and having an Ofsted rating of outstanding for overall effectiveness, teaching and learning and leadership and management.

Michael Loncaster, head teacher at Molescroft Primary School, said: “This is a major recognition of what the school achieves and has the capacity to develop in the future.

“An exciting part of this selection is that we shall be working with a core group of partners to promote excellence and innovation in education.

“The status puts those at the heart of the education process in a position to take the initiative to shape future developments.

“The East Riding is full of talented people in well over 100 schools who work daily with our young people and know how to inspire learning.

“The partnership is there to work with and harness this talent to secure the investment in future generations.

“Already 20 schools in and out of the county have indicated that they wish to join our partnership for developing the art of teaching and learning. It is humbling to be put at the heart of this process.”

John Seaman, principal adviser with East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s improvement and learning service, said: “We are extremely proud of what Molescroft Primary and their partner schools have achieved in earning this prestigious status.

“The Teaching School Alliance offers an excellent vehicle for driving school improvement in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

“We are delighted to be in partnership with East Riding schools and the University of Hull as members of the teaching school alliance

Steve Munby, chief executive of the National College, said: “Teaching schools like Molescroft Primary School need to be at the top of their game to take on this role – outstanding in their own performance and have a track record of raising standards through school-to-school support.

“We now have over 200 teaching schools around the country who are in a position to harness the finest teaching talent in the profession to drive school improvement in innovative ways and bring real benefits to pupils and staff.

“Trainees can learn from the best teachers in action and those who want to move up the career ladder are exposed to excellent practice within and beyond their immediate school.

“As they develop, teaching schools working with other schools and universities will help to provide a strong supply of new teachers, develop leaders and the next generation of heads and support schools in challenging circumstances.”

Olympic-Torch

The Olympic Torch will arrive in the South of England today, ready to begin its 70-day trek around the United Kingdom ending at the Olympic Stadium in London for the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games on Friday, 27 July.

More than 8,000 inspirational torchbearers will carry the Olympic Flame around the UK and the route will be animated by the official London 2012 presenting partners, Coca Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung, however local schools, community groups and residents are encouraged to line the streets with flags and banners to welcome the flame to our area.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “It’s hard to believe that we are only a month away from welcoming the Olympic Torch to the East Riding, in what I am sure will be two days of celebrations as this once-in-a-lifetime event unfolds.

“The Olympic Torch Relay will provide a global platform for our area to shine and I would urge residents and visitors alike to line the streets and cheer on the torchbearers as they carry the flame through the East Riding to its eventual stop in London and the 2012 Olympic Games.”

The relay will reach the East Riding by mid-afternoon on Monday, 18 June, with the first torchbearer receiving the flame in Bridlington at 3pm on (A1038) Scarborough Road and reverting to convoy mode at around 3.22pm.

The flame will arrive in Beverley, at around 4.16pm, on Norwood (A1035), with the first torchbearer, passing by Beverley High School, into Saturday Market and past the Minister before reverting to convoy mode at around 4.47pm.

On Tuesday, 19 June, the torch will leave its overnight stop in Hull and head out to Brough, where it will enter torchbearer mode at around 7.37am on Welton Road and revert back to convoy mode at around 8.02am.

The relay’s final viewing point in the East Riding will be in Goole, where it will go into torchbearer mode at around 8.29am on Boothferry Road, pass through the town centre and revert back to convoy mode at around 8.51am on (A164) Rawcliffe Road.

With just three weeks to go until the Olympic Torch arrives in the East Riding, the council is encouraging businesses, both on and off the relay route, in Bridlington, Beverley, Brough and Goole to make sure they have business continuity plans in place for when the torch passes through their town.

Businesses should consider whether or not they will allow staff to watch the relay, allow for flexibility with regards to working arrangements, ensure they have adequate stock before the day and that they have sufficient staffing levels, feedback received from areas where the torch has already passed through have reported an increase in consumer activity.

Businesses wishing to decorate premises ahead of the relay should consult the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) website www.london2012.com/about-us/our-brand/using-the-brand/index.html to ensure that they are not in contravention of the London 2012 brand.

Paul Bell, head of economic regeneration at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The Olympic Torch Relay’s visit to our area is a once in a life time event for residents and visitors and is an excellent opportunity for the local economy.

“We would urge all businesses in Bridlington, Beverley, Brough and Goole to make the necessary arrangements in advance of the 18 and 19 June and, if need be, seek advice from their local business centre.”

Olympic Torch, Beverley

When the Torch will be in Beverley?

The Olympic Torch Relay will reach the East Riding of Monday, 18 June and after visiting Bridlington will arrive in Beverley on route to its overnight stop in Hull.

The relay turns to torchbearer mode at approximately 4.16pm, in Beverley, on Norwood (A1035), passing by Corporation Road on the left and Beverley High School on the right.

The route then turns left onto New Walkergate (A164) before turning right onto Sow Hill Road before progressing into Saturday Market.

The Flame will then go through Saturday Market down Toll Gavel before turning right onto Butcher Row and Lord Roberts Road. The route will then turn left onto Champney Road before again turning left onto Lairgate and then left again onto Keldgate at the double mini roundabout.

The route will go down Keldgate, passing Keldgate Bar on the right and Beverley Minster on the left before turning right on Flemingate (B1230).

Torchbearers will then continue down Flemingate passing by Spark Mill Lane on the right and Wiles Court, Beckside and Waterside Road on the left, before reverting to convoy mode at around 4.47pm.

How the Torch Travels

Torchbearer Mode – This is when a torchbearer will carry the flame through the streets of the East Riding for approximately 300m each before passing the flame onto the next torchbearer. This will happen only through the four chosen communities on the route (Bridlington, Beverley, Brough and Goole). The torchbearer will be flanked by a number of vehicles such as the police, media and sponsor activation vehicles.

Convoy Mode – This is when the flame will be carried inside a vehicle and travel at national speed limits on route to the next community on route. This would not be an advisable method for viewing the convoy.

Due to the narrow streets in Beverley, the convoy and the torchbearer will split up, as the torch is carried through the town the convoy will proceed down New Walkergate and rendezvous with the torchbearer at Wednesday Market.

Transport / Road Closures / Disabled Viewing Areas

The preferred viewing area for people with disabilities will be located at the Cross Street/Toll Gavel junction. This area will be stewarded and will also be the location of St John’s Ambulance and the point for lost children.

The council would advise people to arrive early to ensure best viewing locations and also to be on the side of the road where the convoy and torch will be being carried.

Ambassadors will be in place, wearing high-visibility vests, to offer any general support to the public.

A Park and Ride facility will operate from Beverley Racecourse from 1.30pm with the last bus leaving Beverley at 6pm.

During the relay, Saturday Market will be closed to vehicles from 1pm and there will be a series of rolling road closures which will be facilitated by Humberside Police, which will be around 10 minutes in length and will cause minimal disruption to traffic.

The Olympic Torch Relay will be the largest ever joint policing operation for Yorkshire and the Humber and the aim is for everyone to enjoy the six day celebration safely without security measures adversely affecting their experience.

Humberside Police assistant chief constable Alan Leaver said: “We do hope that people come along to see the Torch. For most of us it will be a once in a lifetime opportunity. We will do all we can to ensure that everybody is able to enjoy the experience peacefully and safely.”

The council advises residents and visitors to carefully consider their travel and viewing arrangements well in advance and, if on the route, to remove their parked vehicles from the street where possible.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The Olympic Torch Relay’s visit to Beverley provides a once in a lifetime opportunity for residents of the town and the surrounding area to be part of a global event.

“The council would encourage people to line the streets and cheer on the torchbearers as they carry the flame through the East Riding and to join in the celebrations for this magnificent occasion.”

School Closures

Some schools may be closing early due to the Olympic Torch Relay. The council would advise parents/guardians to contact their child’s school to make sure what the arrangements will be.

Schools In Est Riding Achieve Best Ever Exam Results

GCSE

The majority of East Riding secondary schools achieved record results today as the final results were checked – but a small number of schools have been affected by national problems with GCSE English marking with one examination board.

The East Riding has improved its performance against all GCSE measures with a three per cent improvement in the gold standard of five or more A* to C grades including English and mathematics to 59 per cent in 2012.

The proportion gaining five or more good passes in any subject has increased by 5 per cent to 85 per cent, 15 per cent above the national average. The average point score, one of the best ways to measure the success of every child, has increased for the seventh consecutive year.

The East Riding secondary school results for those students achieving the gold standard mark of five or more GCSE passes at A* to C grade, including English and maths are in the table below.

Several schools in the East Riding have been negatively affected by a late change in grade boundaries in English GCSE; these include Bridlington School, Beverley High School, Driffield School and South Holderness Technology College.

Large numbers of schools, head teachers organisations and local authorities will ask for papers to be remarked and challenge the process of English marking as a whole by one examination board. Many schools across the country are challenging the single examination board about the changes that have led to almost 9,000 fewer grades A*-C in English this year.

Councillor Julie Abraham, portfolio holder for children, young people and maintained schools at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “It is excellent that, with these results, so many of our young people have a firm base from which to make decision on the next step from here, whether it be into further education or into the world of work and training.”

Alison Michalska, director of children, family and adult services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We are tremendously proud that year after year young people continue to achieve even better GCSE or level two results in East Riding secondary schools in a wide range of qualifications.

“These pleasing results are underpinned by many outstanding stories of hard work and application as well as committed teaching and support.

“We are delighted in the improvement and these results restore our position as a high performing local authority.

“The performance in the gold standard of five or more A* to C grades, including English and maths, shows that key numeracy and literacy skills continue to thrive alongside other subjects and that we have got the balance right in our secondary schools.

“We are proud of the work done by young people throughout the East Riding, with the support of their carers and families. We greatly appreciate the hard work of head teachers and teaching and support staff that have contributed to these results.

“That they achieve this against a backdrop of very low level of funding from the Department for Education for East Riding schools is testament to their determined commitment to their pupils’ achievement.

“The national concern around the English mark is extremely worrying and wish our schools well in challenging the results for their pupils.”

Sharon Japp, head teacher of Beverley High School, said: “ We are extremely disappointed, but will be asking for a quarter of our English papers remarked and support a national investigation into what went wrong with the marking this year.

“We have had lots of success this year in a wide range of GCSEs, which continue to be well above the national average and the numbers achieving five good passes have held up very well.

“Our A level results continue to be some of the best in the region. We are proud of the success of girls in year 11 this year in a challenging national context.”

Simon Jones, head teacher at Driffield School, said: “Both of our papers in English have significantly fewer A* to C than we expected, all other subjects have done well, this national problem with English is extremely disappointing, but we will be submitting large numbers of papers to be remarked.

“We expect our results to go up as a result of the re-marked papers. We have some very impressive results in our GCSEs this year and the English marking by this exam board have let our students down, we look forward to this being put right in the near future.”

Sarah Pashley, head teacher of Bridlington School, said: “I am delighted with the improvement in our school over the last few years.

“This year’s GCSE results have been much better with a huge improvement in five or more good passes much improved A level grades, and we feel let down by the English marking in this examination board.

“We hope that many GCSE English papers we are sending back will be remarked with the grade our students deserve.”

John Seaman, principal adviser at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “This is been a great year overall for students in East Riding secondary schools, we are immensely proud of the improved GCSE grades achieved by nearly 4,000 young people in East Riding schools.

“We are very supportive of those schools who have been badly hit by the problems with one English Examination Board along with many Yorkshire and Humber local authorities and others across the country, we will support an investigation into what happened and are confident that remarked papers will go a long way towards redressing the issue.

“We are proud of schools’ continuing improvement in the East Riding of Yorkshire.”

The winners of a jingle competition around a new Government policy to help promote a brighter future for young people have been announced.

Viking FM, in association with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, gave students the opportunity to create a genuine radio jingle to promote the RPA (Raising the Participation Age) campaign, >move on | aim high>.

Students competed with teams from schools right across the region and the winner has been invited to record their jingle in the famous Viking FM studios. This jingle will then be broadcast on-air as part of the subsequent campaign on Viking FM raising awareness the various options available to young people after compulsory schooling, as well as highlighting the >log on | move on> website which provides information and guidance about the post-16 opportunities open to young people living in the East Riding and Hull.

Today, Viking FM Drive presenter Liam Smedley attended an assembly at Beverley High School to present the prize of a framed winner’s certificate, iPod Shuffle and tickets to The Deep to Key Stage 3 winner, Gina Woodmancy. He said:

“It’s great to see how passionate young people have been about this competition. The standard of entries has been excellent. We loved Gina’s entry, she’s shown a real talent for jingle writing.”

Jane Fisher, 14-19 lead officer at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “RPA will affect every young person in Year 11 and below.

“This competition gave us the opportunity to raise the awareness of RPA and I would like to thank the teachers and young people who took part.”

The lucky, overall winner was Key Stage 4 winner Brad Abbott from Headlands School in Bridlington, whose jingle will be recorded at the Viking FM studio and broadcast on-air.

Year 10 students, Beth Edeson, Teigan Gardham, Chloe Broadbent, Daisy Taylor, picked up the Group Award and Wolfreton School’s Zara Good took the prizes for runner-up.

Beverley Treasure House : Pancakes And Old School Bakes

Beverley Treasure House

The word ‘bake’ derives from the Old English ‘bacan’, and the Old Norse word ‘baka’. People have probably been baking food since it was discovered how to make fire, but the first known use of ‘bake’ in its modern form was in 1565, as it became fashionable to note down a popular recipe.

It’s fair to say that people have been writing down successful recipes ever since, as can be demonstrated by the number of recipes to be found in the archives at the Treasure House, in Beverley, where you will discover several old recipes going back to the 18th Century.

Some of the most interesting of these old recipes are actually more recent and were written down in the recipe book of Grace Ockleton of Beverley.

Grace was a pupil at Beverley High School for Girls, and went on to become the headmistress there. She began a recipe book in the spring term of 1926, two years after she passed her exams as a pupil, and it is thought that the book was used by Grace to note down useful recipes that she would teach to the girls in home economics classes.

The book contains instructions for how to make apricot delights, coconut ice, Queen’s pudding and, most appetising of all, pancake scones. All were made in Grace’s own style and passed on to the young schoolgirls of Beverley, some of whom would undoubtedly have taken the recipes and continued to use them to bake for their families in adult life.

Sam Bartle, collections officer, said: “Traditionally, we have handed down our best recipes from generation to generation and in some ways this still continues; only we tend to rely now on TV, published books and the internet and it is the celebrity chef, rather than grandma, or great grandma, who supplies us with the recipe.”

Grace Ockleton’s recipe book is currently on display at the Treasure House, in Champney Road, Beverley, but you can also search the archives yourself for other old recipes by making a visit to the archives and local studies service, also in the Treasure House.

Champney’s, the in-house coffee lounge, provides homemade baking produce and will soon be offering its customers some tasty items baked from old archive recipes.

Beverley High School are again celebrating after a number of their students won awards at the National Spelling Bee Competition.

Jazmine Schultz, Rebecca Jenkins, Josephine Stone and Lucy Jenkins will all go to the National Final after their efforts in the regional contests.

In its third year, the competition is designed to encourage students to develop strategies for learning new vocabulary in a foreign language.

Students from Year 7 at Beverley High School were given 50 words in either French or German. They had to learn the translation and also how to spell the words in the native alphabet. They were then all tested on how many words they could recall and spell within a minute.

The winners of were then presented with another 50 words before taking part in competition held at the school in the main hall in front of staff and parents.

Language teacher Julie Wilson said;

“It was a very exciting yet tense event, there were some really outstanding performances in both French and German.”

Winners then progressed to the regional finals that were held in April at Hull University, which featured students from across Yorkshire and the Humber.

Beverley High School’s Jazmine Schultz, Rebecca Jenkins, Josephine Stone and Lucy Jenkins like the others taking part was each tested on a massive 150 words each!

Jazmine came first in French while Josephine got first place in German, Rebecca came fourth in French and Lucy third in German meaning all four of the girls will take part in the national finals in July.

Julie added;

“Our girls were amazing. It is a great achievement that all four of them got through to the National Final.”

The school has every reason to be proud, this year over 5,000 students entered the competition from the region and to get such good results is a truly incredible achievement.
